There’s No Spoon On Your Journey Either

TL;DR:

Fear keeps us trapped in a limited version of ourselves, just as it kept Neo fighting the Matrix on its own terms rather than transcending them. Once we stop treating our self-imposed mental boundaries as fixed reality, we unlock the ability to move through challenges with creative clarity instead of reactive force.

As Neo was waiting to be summoned before the Oracle, he heard what is, to me, one of the most important one-liners in film history - besides 'For Frodo,' of course.

‘There’s no spoon.’

The sentence was pivotal because he was conflicted about his own fears and the weight of potential to become The One and went there to be reassured of his part of the prophecy.

Interpreting the idea wasn’t the challenge itself; it simply meant that the physical existence of the spoon itself cannot be bent. The task was to accept how the projection didn’t exist, and the work could only begin after accepting that fact. Then it transfers to bending the projection.

Fear, Anger, Action

Not to draw hasty conclusions, but Neo’s emotional burden was above all; the fate of what remained of humanity was dragging him. Morpheus was already convinced he finally found who can liberate them, and he used every chance to remind Neo.

This pressure combined with the presentation of how the machines will eventually seize and conquer the last thinking part of humanity created the fearful pressure.

Two reactions alternated constantly: one born from being frozen, the other from activated fight mode. In the beginning, anger pushed him into action. You could clearly see how Neo drew from his connection to his anger to act, usually hastily.

When you start connecting to and understand how anger takes place in your life and look behind what fuels that anger, you usually find fear as the primary motivator. Fear of lacking safety or tools to stand up for yourself. The reason is primal and instinctive. When you are in danger, you need force to create movement, and your anger will do it for you.

Cloudy judgement

As fear takes lead, it will create a state of focus that shuts out judgment almost completely. Action becomes intuitive if your body has learned how to move beforehand. As Neo spent hours in virtual training, he learned all the possible ways to act when he encountered agents, the main source of imminent danger.

The encounters resulted in losing every time until the end because Neo still tried to bend the projection. He understood the concept but because he still acted out of fear, he limited his actions. He was still thinking as if he wasn’t capable, despite learning all the moves.

Becoming The One

Eventually as the film neared its end and pressure rose to boiling point, the idea clicked for Neo. He became cornered so he had no other choice than to let go and he finally gave in. Fear was replaced with intuition.

As fear couldn’t narrow possibilities anymore, every knowledge found its place in a flowing state where danger could be seen through plainly and could be solved creatively instead of forcing the solution.

As Neo let himself see danger as is, he realized he’s way more capable than he previously imagined. He started to bend the rules only he could, because he could understand the rules as a limitation and refuse to be limited by them.

I was fascinated by this idea because it portrays one empowering concept in our lives. The main limitation is our imagination and how we see ourselves in our present and future. I’m not saying you can be anything, because I didn’t become an NBA star either.

But you can certainly think outside your own box to find ways to reach your goals and change what bothers you in your life. It takes time and practice for sure and will be uncomfortable.

Let’s sit with this question for a while: wouldn’t it all be worth it if you knew that the only thing blocking you is your own belief that the spoon is real?

If you want to act more out of calm intuition instead of raw fear, I offer free intro calls to see how I can help you reconnect to existing strengths.

I can help you see how not to be limited by the rules of the spoon.

It’s perfectly okay to ask for support. You don’t have to figure everything out on your own. While I believe everyone is their own best expert, I’m also a big believer in asking for help to create change together. It’s comforting to have someone by our side as we go through transitions. If you’re feeling motivated to expand your comfort zone and curious about how I can support you on your journey, let’s talk.

Reading this is one thing — sitting with what it brings up is another. That's exactly the kind of space online life coaching is built for.
